Coronavirus: US records biggest daily rise in new COVID-19 cases since start of pandemic

Coronavirus: US records biggest daily rise in new COVID-19 cases since start of pandemic COVID-19 cases in the United States rose by more than 47,000 on Tuesday (local time), making it the largest daily increase since the pandemic began, according to a Reuters tally. . . California, Texas and Arizona also reported record-high increases in COVID-19 cases, and the US' top infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci is warning the daily increase in new cases could reach 100,000 soon. "Clearly we are not in total control right now," he said to the US Congress. "I am very concerned because it could get very bad." It's the sixth day in a row new cases have been above 40,000 each day. It brings the total number of cases to over 2.7 million, and just over 130,000 COVID-19-related deaths have been recorded. Fauci urged a nationwide public health push is needed in order to clamp down on the spike in cases. "We can't just focus on those...

Why the national party are no longer saying NZ should follow Swedens lead with COVID-19

Why the national party are no longer saying NZ should follow Swedens lead with COVID-19 Sweden on Tuesday announced a commission to evaluate its response to the novel coronavirus, reacting to criticism over a death toll that has far exceeded that of its neighbours. More than 5,300 Swedes have died compared to around 250 in Norway, 600 in Denmark and 325 in Finland, all of which have populations around half the size. Sweden, unlike the rest of Scandinavia, chose not to close schools and businesses to fight the spread of the virus. "It is not a question of whether Sweden is going to change as a result of this - the question is how," Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told a news conference. . . The commission has a broad mandate to look at how the virus arrived in Sweden, how it spread, the government's and other authorities' response, and the effect on equality. Sweden's response to the virus outbreak, which has relied mainly on voluntary measures an...

New swine flu strain: Discovering new viruses not 'uncommon', but have to 'keep eye out' - Ashley Bloomfield

New swine flu strain: Discovering new viruses not 'uncommon', but have to 'keep eye out' - Ashley Bloomfield New Zealand's Director-General of Health says discovering new viruses isn't "uncommon", but we do have to keep an eye out for them and "be ready to respond if needs be". Earlier this week, researchers in China revealed they had found a new strain of swine flu - referred to as G4 EA H1N1 - which had "all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus".  The study, which surveyed pigs between 2011 and 2018, published in the scientific journal  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences  also said people working with the pigs had been infected.  While that showed the ability for the virus to pass from animals to humans, no evidence of human-to-human transmission has yet been found. "Controlling the prevailing G4 EA H1N1 viruses in pigs and close monitoring in human populations, especially the worker...

Coronavirus: United States could face 100,000 cases a day, no guarantee safe vaccine is coming - Anthony Fauci

Coronavirus: United States could face 100,000 cases a day, no guarantee safe vaccine is coming - Anthony Fauci The United States cannot count on the availability of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, the government's top infectious diseases expert said on Tuesday, and he warned that the daily surge in cases could more than double if Americans fail to take steps to get the virus under control. California, Texas and many other states have reported record increases in new cases of the sometimes deadly illness caused by the novel coronavirus, leading to a sobering reassessment of US efforts to contain the pandemic. "It's extremely important to have safe and effective vaccines available for everyone in this country," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a US Senate committee. Scores of vaccine candidates using a variety of approaches are being developed and tested at unprecedented speed. Fauci, h...

Writing for  Forbes  Monday, Mr. Shellenberger — a  Time  magazine Hero of the Environment and winner of the 2008 Green Book Award —  said  that on behalf of environmentalists everywhere, “I would like to formally apologize for the climate scare we created over the last 30 years.” “Climate change is happening. It’s just not the end of the world. It’s not even our most serious environmental problem,” Shellenberger declares. As an Expert Reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), “I feel an obligation to apologize for how badly we environmentalists have misled the public,” he states...

US couple who pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters outside their mansion could face charges

US couple who pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters outside their mansion could face charges A couple who pulled guns on Black Lives Matter protesters outside their Missouri mansion may now face charges after an investigation was launched. Lawyers Mark and Patricia McCloskey, 63 and 61, were captured pointing an assault rifle and a pistol at demonstrators, who gathered on their private street in St Louis and fired insults at them. Local police initially said the pair would not be punished for their actions, but the city's prosecutor, Circuit Attorney Kimberly Garnder, says she's now working with police to investigate them. . . "I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault," she said at a press conference on Monday night (local time). "We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly forc...

Donald Trump has failed at home and abroad

Image
Donald Trump has failed at home and abroad Joe Biden took aggressive aim Tuesday at President Donald Trump's fitness for the Oval Office, suggesting he has abdicated his duty to protect US troops facing Russian enemies abroad and American citizens facing a pandemic and economic calamity at home. Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, told reporters Trump has “a lot to answer for'' concerning news reports that he was advised as early as March 2019 of intelligence that suggested Russia was offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans. And, in prepared remarks, Biden accused Trump of “waving the white flag'' as  coronavirus cases spike in the US  and the death toll surpasses 125,000. The one-two punch reflects the core of Biden's candidacy, which he built on the argument that Trump is morally and temperamentally unfit to lead the nation. He sought again Tuesday to draw sharp contrasts with his own experience and style ...
