C hristopher Luxon has called the language used in an email sent by one of his senior MPs “strong” and says he has spoken with him. . . The email from Chris Bishop has been circulating on social media in recent days. In it, he compares the “barbarity” of Hamas’s attacks on Israel to the holocaust.  “After 1945 the world said ‘never again’, well – now it is happening again,” wrote Bishop. The deaths between Friday and Sunday included two in Tampa, Florida, three in Texarkana, Texas, and two each in Dodge City, Kansas; San Antonio, Texas; and Mansfield, Ohio, according to police. Many involved altercations arising from Halloween celebrations, including the mass shooting in Tampa’s Ybor City section early Sunday as bars were closing and scores of people in costumes spilled out on the streets before groups began arguing. The spate of weekend violence unfolded as people mourn the 18 killed by a gunman last week in Lewiston, Maine. More than 1,000 people  turned out Sunday for a vigil . . ...

As has become clear since the general election, Luxon doesn't like to talk extensively about how the discussions are going.  . . Luxon wants to do this like a corporate business deal rather than allowing some scrutiny of who he's meeting with. Luxon views previous coalition talks as political theatre when in reality the coverage actually provides good insight into what the relevant parties want our country to look like. These are the...

What few people ask, however, is why, after decades of high-profile mass shootings and nearly 50,000 gun-related deaths each year, we’re still trying to understand the causes of gun violence. Were it not for a nearly two-decade stoppage in federally funded gun violence research, we might have been closer to having these answers, says Garen Wintemute, an e...
