Glaciers worldwide are now losing 298 billion tonnes of ice every year,  the study published in  Nature  found , up from 227 billion tonnes 20 years ago.  New Zealand glaciers are losing about 1.5m a year, shrinking seven times faster than they were in the early 2000s.   "Some of them are hundreds of metres thick so you might think 1.5 metres doesn't' sound li...

National Party warned for failing to declare donation on time

National Party warned for failing to declare donation on time The National Party has been warned by the Electoral Commission for failing to declare a donation on time. National Party leader Judith Collins Photo: RNZ / Samuel Rillstone Any donation of over $30,000 must be declared to the Commission within 10 working days of it being received. National received a $35,000 donation from businessman Garth Barfoot and it should have been filed after the election in November last year. The party did not declare the money until 31 March. A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission said it had written to the National Party "reinforcing the importance of adhering to the statutory timeframes and noted that an additional step is being taken to strengthen donation notification processes within the party". Since 2011, there have been 11 instances of parties declaring donations over $30,000 late, including this one. Three were referred to the poli...

US investigators raid Giuliani's New York apartment

Image
US investigators raid Giuliani's New York apartment Federal investigators on Wednesday executed a search warrant at the Manhattan apartment of Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and personal lawyer to former US president Donald Trump, as they probe his business dealings with Ukraine. File photo of Rudy Giuliani. Photo: AFP A lawyer for Giuliani, Bob Costello, confirmed that a search warrant had been executed. Electronic devices were among the items seized, according to the New York Times. Giuliani, 76, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been investigating Giuliani's dealings in Ukraine, which included an investigation before the 2020 election into now-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's dealings in that country. The Bidens have denied wrongdoing. Giuliani began representing Trump, a fellow Republican, in April 2018 in connection with former Special Coun...

The skies above Rakiura / Stewart Island have already seen the area classified as 'Dark Sky Sanctuary'. Photo: Supplied / Sandra Whipp Great South Southland Regional Development Agency has been working with the Fiordland community and stakeholders on the possibility of it becoming an accredited Dark Sky Park with the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). Work is already under way with hopes it would bring domestic and international visitors to the region. Great South expected it would extend the tourism season over winter when viewing is at its best, and spokesperson Amie Young said Fiordland already ticked most of the boxes with very little light pollution. "It's not about no light but it's how light is used, directing it downward where it's needed i...
