Jacinda Ardern shares her mum's small act of kindness in Facebook post

Never underestimate the power of a banana and a handful of Easter eggs - the humble snacks will be fuelling the Prime Minister through her Tuesday to-do-list, which includes leading the response to a national emergency. 

Jacinda Ardern shared a sweet snap of her packed lunch to her public Facebook on Tuesday morning, thanking her mother, Laurell, for leaving the lunchbox and a cup of tea outside her door as she got ready for work.

"Left before anyone in my house was up this morning - at least so I thought. Turns out mum had got up and packed breakfast and a cup of tea for me and left it outside my door. And when it's not mum making tea, it's Clarke [Gayford, Ardern's fiance]. I am very lucky to be surrounded by kindness," the Prime Minister wrote.

The small act of kindness has touched many of Ardern's followers, the post amassing more than 98,000 likes within two hours. 

"A little kindness goes a long way. It's so nice to know that you are being looked after in your bubble," one person wrote.

"So nice to hear you are being [helped] and looked after... you once hugged [my mother] at a cafe in Greytown, I adore you and my daughter who is seven, you are her idol and she wants to grow up to be strong and courageous and loving as you are," another shared.

"Kindness breeds kindness. Thanks for all the hard work you're doing. Keep up the great work! We are very grateful."

Last week, the Prime Minister assured New Zealand's children that the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny were "essential workers" during Alert Level 4 lockdown.

"As you can imagine at this time, they're going to potentially be quite busy at home with their family as well and their own bunnies," she said during the now-viral press conference.

"So I say to the children of New Zealand that if the Easter Bunny doesn't make it to your household, then we have to understand that it's a bit difficult at the moment for the bunny to perhaps get everywhere."

This is a message for the kids of New Zealand. I’ve been asked by lots of you whether the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny are an essential service (I even got asked in a press conference today!) I have good news, the are! But because we’re all in isolation at the moment, the Easter Bunny might not make it to every house this year (they probably have to look after their own Bunny family too). So just in case, I’m wondering if you’ll help me create an Easter egg hunt for all the children in your neighbourhood? You can draw your own Easter egg, or you can colour in the one that some of my clever friends helped to make. All you have to do is colour it in or decorate it, and pop it in your window for other kids to find. I'd also love to see your designs. On Thursday, the Prime Minister will be revealing more details regarding COVID-19 Alert Levels 2 and 3 as New Zealand's Level 4 lockdown period, tentatively set for four weeks, draws to a close. Whether or not the lockdown will be extended is set to be announced on April 20.
