T
he bacteria was discovered on a South Canterbury farm and eventually spread to more than 270 properties.
It causes untreatable mastitis, abortions, pneumonia and arthritis in cows - and it saw 176,000 cattle killed in a bid to control it.But on Thursday Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern celebrated the eradication of the disease, with just one property remaining that's infected.
.

.
The government is now moving from an eradication plan to a pest management plan.
But is it too early for celebrations? David Clark, the Federated Farmers' mid-Canterbury president joined Lloyd Burr to discuss.

Burr began by asking Clark if it's a significant milestone?
"It is a promising interim milestone that we've met today that we're down to one property that is infected, Clark said.
"But it's certainly it's a good reminder of the caution we need to have going forward to make sure that any residual infections that are out there, we find them and eradicate them before the disease quietly spreads again.
Burr asks Clark about the final property with M. bovis.
"It is a very large property and population of animals that still got to be depopulated, so that process is going to be ongoing.

Clark says It will be the single biggest cost of the program.
"it's imperative that that property doesn't end up reinfected again, depopulating this particular facility is something that can only be done once so so that's really important.
"But it's equally important that if it pops up on any individual farms, we get on top of it quickly".
