NZ First leader and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said Auckland Transport was a failed experiment without enough accountability to the people of Auckland. Auckland Transport was first established in 2010, when Auckland's seven districts amalgamated into the city council, taking over the work of the Auckland Regional Transportation Authority. It is one of four council-controlled organisations in Auckland, with the council responsible for appointing at least 50 percent of the board. Health New Zealand is asking for voluntary redundancies from admin and advisory staff, as it continues to cut costs. A union representing junior doctors, Speciality Trainees of New Zealand, said the current hiring freeze on support staff had already loaded more paperwork on its members.
