Joining the longtime politician are four others who will be receiving a new title in front of their names. Here is a brief rundown of what led to them being honoured.
Mallard has been made a Knight Companion of the said Order for services as a Member of Parliament and as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He first entered Parliament in 1984 as a Labour Party MP. That stint lasted until 1990, before he went on to a long career in Parliament between 1993 and 2022.

Bareman has been made a Dame Companion of the said Order for services to football governance.
She is Chief Women's Football Officer for FIFA and represents 211 member countries, making her one of the most powerful people in sports.

John Campbell recently spent an extended period with Bareman during this year's FIFA Women's World Cup.
He described her as having a passion for transformation that goes beyond tea-towel homilies and the 'just do it' nonsense of people with less to say than they let on.
Dr Scott Duncan Macfarlane
Macfarlane has been made a Knight Companion of the said Order for services to health.
He is credited with transforming the treatment and improvement of children with cancer in New Zealand for the past 45 years.
He led the development of a National Child Cancer Service (now National Child Cancer Network) in 2000 and was instrumental in establishing the National Child Cancer Network in 2011.
Macfarlane was made a life member of the Child Cancer Foundation in 2015 and retired in 2021.
Pania Tyson-Nathan
Tyson-Nathan has been made a Dame Companion of the said Order for services to MΔori and business.
It comes after she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018 for her services to MΔori and business.
She has been championing advancement in MΔori economic development across various domains including community, business, and government sectors for more than three decades.
In recognition of her contributions to repositioning MΔori tourism as deeper and more meaningful, she was named in the top 50 Global Tourism Innovators in 2021

Ian Barry Mune
Mune has been made a Knight Companion of the said Order for services to film, television and theatre.
He is an award-winning actor, writer and director for stage and screen, who has focused on telling the stories of New Zealanders in an authentic voice since the 1970s.
His notable earlier film productions include co-writing seminal Kiwi classics Sleeping Dogs (1977) and Goodbye Pork Pie (1981).
He also directed Came a Hot Friday (1984).
As an actor with more than 70 screen roles to date, he has continued to perform in a variety of film, television and theatre productions, most recently in the miniseries The Pact (2021).
