Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been recognised for her leadership, as one of the annual DVF Award honorees.
Named after Belgian fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, the awards are handed out each year to honour women who embody courage, resilience, and leadership.

.
The awards began in 2010, and past recipients have included former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, and former US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Ardern received the award at a glitzy ceremony in Venice, hosted by Oprah.
Wearing a dress designed by New Zealand fashion designer Juliette Hogan, on accepting the award, Ardern said people were demanding a more humane type of leadership.
βWeβre facing the biggest challenges in climate change; children are growing up in regions with wars raging around them, with all the terror and hate they bring. Democracy is at risk, people are worried about their jobs. All of that β thereβs little we cannot solve when we focus on our shared humanity,β Ardern said.
Vogue Magazine, Ardern added, βwe demand from our leaders the same empathy, kindness, generosity and curiosity we teach our children. I believe itβs possible to lead differently, and Iβm on a mission to help others do the same.β
Ardern is writing a book on her experience as a leader, while she has also started a fellowship programme on empathetic leadership.

She was Prime Minister of New Zealand between 2017 and 2023, leading the country through a series of challenging events, including the Christchurch mosque attacks in 2019, the Whakaari/White Island eruption of the same year, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ardern resigned from the role in 2023. At the time she said she did not have enough βleft in the tank for another four yearsβ.
Other recipients of the 2024 DVF Award included the co-founder of Women Wage Peace, Yael Admi, and climate justice activist and co-founder of Re-Earth Initiative, Xiye Bastida.
