resident Donald Trump has launched baseless attacks on former President Barack Obama, alleging "treason" and a "coup" tied to the 2016 election, citing declassified documents from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

These documents, including a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report, claim Obama’s administration fabricated Russian interference to undermine Trump’s victory.

However, the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee debunked these allegations, confirming Russia’s 2016 election meddling through social media and leaks.

Experts, like Rep. Jim Himes, dismiss Gabbard’s report as a distraction from the intensifying Epstein controversy, where Trump’s name appears in DOJ files, fueling MAGA outrage.

The Epstein issue is central to the crisis. In May, Attorney General Pam Bondi informed Trump his name was in Epstein-related DOJ documents, per The Wall Street Journal

A July DOJ memo denied a “client list” or blackmail evidence, affirming Epstein’s 2019 suicide, contradicting Trump’s transparency promises.

This has sparked fury among MAGA figures like Laura Loomer, who warned of a “destroyed” presidency, and Megyn Kelly and Matt Walsh, who criticized Trump’s “hoax” claims implicating Obama, Hillary Clinton, and others.

Polls show 70% of Trump voters believe in a cover-up, amplified by a July ruling blocking Florida grand jury transcripts and a bipartisan House Oversight subpoena for DOJ files and Ghislaine Maxwell’s deposition.

Trump’s deflections—fixating on Obama, the Washington Commanders’ name, Martin Luther King Jr.’s files, and posting an AI-generated video of Obama’s arrest on Truth Social—have backfired.

Internal chaos, including Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino’s near-resignation over Bondi’s handling of a February file leak mentioning Trump, worsens the situation.

These tactics fail to address MAGA’s relentless demand for unredacted Epstein files, risking alienation of key supporters like Loomer and Michael Flynn.

Democrats, such as Sen. Chris Van Hollen, exploit Trump’s 1990s Epstein ties to question his reluctance, framing it as hypocrisy.

The political fallout could fracture Trump’s base, potentially depressing 2026 midterm turnout and weakening GOP prospects.

While Trump’s approval ratings hold, analysts warn that betraying MAGA’s trust on this core issue could erode his grip on the party.

The DOJ’s “strike force” to investigate Gabbard’s claims against Obama risks legal backlash, as no credible evidence supports these allegations, per Rep. Himes.

The Epstein controversy, unlike past scandals, pits Trump against his base’s expectations, amplified by years of conspiracy theories.

While Trump’s history of surviving controversies suggests resilience, the lack of transparency on the Epstein files and the failure of deflections like the Obama attacks could erode MAGA loyalty.

Without concrete evidence of a grand conspiracy in the Epstein case or Gabbard’s claims, the situation remains volatile.

Trump’s ability to pivot to new narratives or deliver on transparency will determine whether he can maintain his base’s support or face lasting political damage in 2026.
